Continuing the Conversation on Race

Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church

819 33rd Avenue North

Women from all over Nashville will gather as we discover how our own stories can and should be shaped by the larger conversation occurring around race in our country.  Dr. Kellett will teach from Waking Up White (Irving) and Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria (Tatum), diverse women will share their stories, and smaller groups of women will discuss their responses.

Convener

Film and Memory in American Cinema

A frequent presenter in the last few years of the Christian Scholar's Conference, Dr. Brandi Kellett will convene a panel and facilitate a discussion around film and memory in American Cinema.  Our talks will explore the trajectory of film, focussing on cinematic trends in blockbuster, seminal Westerns, as well as documentaries which explore environmental decline and its impact on everyday Americans.  Questions which will be explored include: How do choices in the film industry shape the way we approach and think about outsiders and heroes?  How is community formed and enhanced by fear of "the other"?  What choices make a film compelling, and how do audiences respond to the spectacle of film?  In the age of Netflix and easily accessed documentaries, are millennials well informed "couch activists" or are they responding thoughtfully to the realities they see in documentaries.

Continuing the Conversation on Race

Join this racially and ethnically diverse group of Christians from all over Nashville as we continue our conversation on race.  Dr. Brandi Kellett will walk us through American history, grounding us in our foundations of racial disparity and inequality.  She will trace these beginnings to our current stagnation, exploring and explaining white privilege and the divides it causes.  Our inability to talk about race is the legacy of living in the tension of a racist society that proclaims itself to be the land of the free.  After Leslie Mitchell shares her own compelling story of how her relationship with race continues to evolve, we will gather in diverse groups of 6-8 and respond, processing together all that we learn.

First Thursdays: Racial Tensions in American Society

First Thursdays, hosted in Franklin, is a small gathering of women from across Middle Tennessee.  Curated by a treasured voice of enthusiastic curiosity, each month a different speaker facilitates a discussion on a topic within her own expertise or exploratory habits. Guests are asked to read selected articles or books in order to come to the discussion having thought and learned about the night's topic.  It is a wonderful space of shared learning and open conversation on a variety of topics, from aging to poverty to rest. This month Dr. Brandi Kellett returns, one year after she first led us in discussing racial myths and memories in the South.  Dr. Kellett will guide us as we discuss the tensions we sense, helping us discover the blocks that prevent us from connecting with and appreciating others.

Real Women, Real Issues, Real Hope

We’ll spend the evening learning about the language associated with racial differences and hearing the stories of real women from diverse backgrounds in the Nashville community before we dive into a small group discussion about how race impacts our lives every day.

Connect with other women who share your same interest in justice and mercy issues relating specifically to women. Registration is required and a buffet dinner will be served.
