Continuing the Conversation on Race

Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church

819 33rd Avenue North

Women from all over Nashville will gather as we discover how our own stories can and should be shaped by the larger conversation occurring around race in our country.  Dr. Kellett will teach from Waking Up White (Irving) and Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria (Tatum), diverse women will share their stories, and smaller groups of women will discuss their responses.

Convener

Film and Memory in American Cinema

A frequent presenter in the last few years of the Christian Scholar's Conference, Dr. Brandi Kellett will convene a panel and facilitate a discussion around film and memory in American Cinema.  Our talks will explore the trajectory of film, focussing on cinematic trends in blockbuster, seminal Westerns, as well as documentaries which explore environmental decline and its impact on everyday Americans.  Questions which will be explored include: How do choices in the film industry shape the way we approach and think about outsiders and heroes?  How is community formed and enhanced by fear of "the other"?  What choices make a film compelling, and how do audiences respond to the spectacle of film?  In the age of Netflix and easily accessed documentaries, are millennials well informed "couch activists" or are they responding thoughtfully to the realities they see in documentaries.
